Painter-printmaker Eric Holch making his mark with scenes of summer

When Eric Holch was younger, his mother, a sculptor and fashion designer, would require every Nantucket house-guest to paint a picture by the time their stay was over. The result was a wall of paintings from a variety of different people with a variety of different styles. Surrounded by art and artists, Holch says, influenced him to pursue a career as a painter and printmaker – a career that has brought him much success and happiness over the past 30 years.

"The Shack, out on Nantucket's South shore, is the iconic beach house for me, and it brings back great memories of beach parties when I was a kid. It's been moved back from the edge about 5 times now as the shoreline recedes each year. Shifting sands indeed!"

So when a large squall moved off to the East and that low Western sunlight peaked below the storm clouds and blasted the white topsides and red steading sail of a lobster boat returning home, it reminded me of Lord Byron's quote and inspired 'After the Storm'".

"Every fall the starlings return and swarm around the island. Most noticeable is when hundreds settle down on the electrical wires and rest up on windy days. Beaks into the wind, they always look like they're having little conversations up there on the wires, and I felt it would make a great print with their silhouettes up against the blue sky."

I've been working on this harbor sunset image for many years and have finally been able to get the colors just the way I wanted. It's been a trial by fire, many rejected proofs, but I love the way it came out! I hope everyone else does, too. I was encouraged to try the different colors with the complete success of last years "Race Week" (see below). I look forward to hearing your response.
Eric Holch - Printmaker
A nice little soft cover book explaining Eric Holch's printmaking process is now available for $25 plus $8 shipping. It features b&w photos that illustrate the step-by-step production techniques, color photos that take the viewer through a nine-color production of the miniature print "Summer", and over 20 color pages illustrating the various periods of Holch's 30 year printmaking career. The 8" x 6" book has 45 pages with 63 photos and is a nice addition to any Eric Holch collection!

Giclee Prints
After much work with this new technology, Eric Holch had two of his favorite oil paintings reproduced in limited edition Giclee prints on Arches paper or on canvas with 100 year fade-resistant inks. They came out quite well and certainly add another dimension for any collector.
